First produced in October 1953, Witness is regarded as one of the three greatest mystery plays of all time. We experience a dazzling array of twists and turns as barrister Sir Wilfrid Robarts tries to prove that Leonard Vole is innocent of murder, despite the damning testimony of Vole's wife, Romaine. In 1953, Ivor Brown praised the play for its ". . . agonized outbreak in the dock. . ." that requires the audience to decide if Romaine could be a "snake in the grass." The 1958 film noir version is also a masterpiece, best known for the fine performances of Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton.
